How do you use the firing patterns of neurons in the human brain as an input for an experimental music project? In collaboration with academics and musicians Jane Grant, John Matthias and Nick Ryan, we were commissioned by onedotzero to create a site specific installation for their Festival in Motion at the BFI, Southbank. The installation consists of an array of microphones at the entrance of the space and a network of speakers arranged across the walls. Each speaker represents a neuron in the human brain, and the sounds that are inputted stimulate the connections between them. As sounds are scattered across the array of speakers, emergent patterns reveal the complex firing patterns of the neurones and the plasticity of the network. Plasticity develops over the course of time. Previously unheard patterns and connections emerge as the installation evolves, creating a unique sonic and visual experience.
